Members of South Carolina’s Legislative Black Caucus are asking South Carolina State University president Thomas Elzey to step down following a vote of no confidence within the caucus Wednesday.
Saying Tuesday’s vote from an education subcommittee to shut down the school for one fiscal year has already damaged the school’s reputation, members of the caucus say it’s time for Elzey to step down.
“We need someone who can lead this school forward and we believe we have a board that can lead the school, but unfortunately the president is not the person we believe can lead South Carolina State forward in making sure that it grows and making sure that it comes out of its financial strain,” Rep. John King said.
